New Years Around The World

HELLO TWENTY TWENTY-THREE! 

We made it, folks!! This is my FIRST blog post of the year. I couldn’t be more excited to share the outcome of a small project I envisioned for some time now. You will find it useful and feel empowered to bring these ideas into your sessions. Enjoy the gift of time during those busy days when you most need it. This New Years around the world lesson plan celebrates diversity!

As I explore ways to be inclusive and culturally responsive in my therapy sessions, I thought I could do so by celebrating heritage months. With that, I researched ideas that I could compile together into a single lesson plan. While these lesson plans are not pages long or significantly extensive, they will get you thinking of different ideas to incorporate into your sessions that align with these heritage months. Of course, you can use these lesson plans at anytime and not just within a specific heritage month. 

Each month, I will be sharing a free lesson plan highlighting ways to celebrate and learn about different heritages and cultural traditions. I am starting out January with the theme “New Years Around The World!” I absolutely love this theme and think you will find it engaging for your students. You can work on pretty much any speech/language goal with these resources. Within each lesson plan you will find links to free and inexpensive resources including but not limited to You Tube (™) videos, Epic Book (™) collections, work created by TPT authors, and the list goes on. 

Session Inspiration

  • Review New Years traditions around the world. Once you have reviewed them, use a graphic organizer to compare/contract the different traditions. Cast votes on which new tradition you think would be fun to try. 
  • Explore recipes that are commonly served around the world during New Years celebrations. You can create a recipe book for your students to bring home.

  • The BUNDLE includes all of my articulation train lessons targeting the following sounds: (F,V,T,D,K,G,P,B,SH,CH,L)⭐This activity targets sounds in the initial, medial, and final position of words.⭐Students can practice the target sound then choose what position the sounds are in (beginning, middle, or end).⭐The students then drag the pictures into the train corresponding to the position that the target sound is in.This fun activity focuses on articulation and phonemic awareness.
  • This lesson is fun and interactive allowing you to address target sounds at both the word level and the sentence level. Students move the red cups to the drop zone to reveal what is under the cup. Targets speech sounds in words and sentences.

  • This speech therapy boom card lesson consists of a word puzzle that the students have to decode to reveal a word containing a target sound. Once the students have decoded the target word, they can read or imitate the tongue twisters that also have the target word. Great for teletherapy and articulation carryover.
  • This activity can be used for a variety of purposes. Students are asked an "If you had to" question (similar to would you rather) and then are given three options that they have to choose for answer. There are a total of 20 questions.This lesson can be used for the following purposes:*ice breaker*articulation carry over*social language goals such as engaging in conversation/turn-taking*spontaneous language.
